Bug Hunting at BowleesTeesdale has great facilities where children can be active, be creative or take in some culture as well as a huge number of special family events and workshops that are organised throughout the year. 

There are a wide range events that take place in the dale that are great for families, with a huge number of activities being organised during the school holiday periods.  The Bowes Museum have an in-house education team and offer great fun workshops and open days at the museum.  These have included Easter Egg Hunts in the museum grounds, Chinese lantern making, or animal encounters to name but a few.  The Witham Hall has regular children's theatre and also organises family workshops during the holiday times.

Raby Castle has a series of family events and in Hamsterley Forest there is a forest school and family fun days during the summer months.

The Bowlees visitor centre in Upper Teesdale is managed by the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. During the holidays they offer a great number of nature based activities from the centre including, scavenger hunts, den building, cooking on an open fire and loads of craft activities.

The Hub, at the edge of Barnard Castle has a wide range of activities on offer for families including high ropes, canoeing, a bmx track and fishing as well as arranging a wide range of special activities and workshops during the main school holidays.

In the centre of Barnard Castle around the entrance to the castle the Town Council puts on a summer series of family events that are free for all to enjoy, these have included the Durham Street artists and a medieval day.

Some of the major annual events, The Meet, The Steam Fair, the agricultural shows, the village fun days and Apple Day in Teesdale are fabulous events with lots for children to do.
